316L Surgical Stainless Steel: Why It Matters

316L is the standard for surgical instruments, marine hardware, and luxury watches. It contains 2–3% molybdenum, which gives it exceptional corrosion resistance against salt, sweat, and acids. The "L" designation means low carbon, which prevents sensitization — the structural weakening that occurs in some stainless steels after welding or machining. Deep etch uses a photoresist mask and electrochemical process to recess the design 0.15mm into the steel, then fills the recess with black or white enamel. It is the most durable decoration method available — the enamel is bonded to the metal at a molecular level and will not wear off.
